Mary became a Councillor because she truly wanted to make a difference. Ensuring that residents' voices are heard by the Council is a priority to Mary, as is standing up and supporting residents.

In 2008 - 2011 Mary was the Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council. One of Mary's proudest achievements was when she won the Women in Public Life Awards, Local Government Personality of the Year 2011.

Before she became a Councilor, Mary worked with her family in a local business, as well as owning and running her own business.

Outside of her role as a Councillor, Mary is the Chairman of the Brighton & Hove Royal British Legion and is a trustee on two local charities, as well as Chairing the Rottingdean and Saltdean Local Action Team, which were set up with Police and Local Authorities to give residents the opportunity to discuss and action a range of issues in their area, including anti-social behaviour, parking, youth provision and other issues that affect their day-to-day lives.
